Michael Lawrence was born in Huntingdonshire, England. At the age of four, his family moved to Sudbury in Middlesex. He later attended Ealing School of Art. He worked as a graphics designer and photographer before turning to writing. When the Snow Falls was his first published work, in 1994. The story was later expanded into A Crack in the Line, the first in the Aldous Lexicon series. He is the co-author of The Poppykettle Papers alongside Robert Ingpen.
